Williams Duo

Trumpeters Bede Williams and Vicky Williams studied music together in the class of 2007 at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, both graduating with a Bachelor of Music (with Honours). It was after completing this undergraduate degree that the pair went on to take a different academic route, Vicky continued to study trumpet and Bede started to study conducting. They did not let this small detail interfere with their musical partnership and continued to play together as the trumpet contingent in the brass quintet, Alba Brass. In February 2011 Bede and Vicky extended their musical collaboration into the world of matrimony.

As a Duo, Bede and Vicky perform nearly every year at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.  Other recitals see them perform with organists and soprano soloists from across Scotland, as well as orchestras such as the Heisenberg Ensemble. Vicky is Team Leader at Sistema Scotland in Stirling and Bede is a Teaching Fellow and New Music Coordinator at the University of St Andrews.  Both Bede and Vicky continue freelancing throughout Scotland.

As a young cornet player, Vicky Williams grew up in West Lothian, very close to Edinburgh, and is a product of the rich brass band community there. From 2003-09 she studied trumpet at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, receiving a Bachelor of Music with Honours and, most recently, a Masters in Music (Performance). Whilst there she studied with John Gracie (Principal trumpet, Royal Scottish National Orchestra), Mark O’Keefe (Principal trumpet, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra) and Peter Franks (Principal trumpet, Scottish Chamber Orchestra).

In July 2009, Vicky was delighted to have received the RSAMD Blair Memorial Prize for Excellence in Brass. During the last few years she has benefited from master classes with Alison Balsom, John Wallace, Rex Richardson and Hakan Hardenberger.

In 2008, Vicky was a participant in the much-esteemed London Symphony Orchestra Brass Academy, where she studied with their Principal Trumpet, Rod Franks. As a freelance trumpet player, Vicky has performed with many of Scotland’s leading orchestra’s including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Bede initially launched his career as a trumpeter studying at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Making his concerto debut at the age of 17 with the Auckland Philharmonia, Bede has appeared as a soloist throughout New Zealand and the United Kingdom, notably winning the 2005 Philip Jones Memorial Prize for brass at the Royal Overseas League music competition, and the 2010 Classical Trumpet competition at the Scottish International Festival of Trumpets.
